Voice (Dysphonia)
-
A voice disorder is present when your voice does not meet your daily needs—even if others do not perceive it as different or deviant (American Speech-Language-Hearing Association [ASHA], 1993; Colton & Casper, 2011; Stemple et al., 2010; Verdolini & Ramig, 2001).
-
Rough, breathy, weak, hoarse or strained voice
Vocal fatigue
Poor pitch control and/or reduced pitch range
Difficulty singing
Tightness or discomfort in the throat
-
After setting the stage for vocally healthy change with breathwork, tension reduction & voice care, the client will begin working on acquiring new communication skills & strategies.
Swallowing (Dysphagia)
-
A swallowing disorder implies there have been changes to the biomechanical properties of the structures involved in transiting liquid/food/saliva through to your digestive tract. This may involve the oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, or gastroesophageal junction. Adults with dysphagia often report reduced enjoyment, embarrassment, and/or isolation related to eating or drinking.
-
Research and clinical experience underline that the signs and symptoms of dysphagia vary between clients. Signs may include:
drooling with saliva and/or oral intake
ineffective chewing
food or liquid remaining in the oral cavity after the swallow
complaints of food “sticking” or complaints of a “fullness” in the neck (globus sensation)
changes in vocal quality (e.g. wet or gurgly sounding voice) during or after eating or drinking
coughing or throat clearing during or after eating or drinking
-
We use traditional and device-led advanced therapies designed to strengthen or maintain the musculature involved in swallowing. We provide and review strategies, diet modifications and caregiver education. These programs are guided by current research, your health and tailored to your individual goals with oral intake.
Gender Affirming Care
-
People may seek gender affirmation services to make their voice and/or other aspects of their communication congruent with their gender and/or gender expression. Gender Affirming Voice Therapy focuses on creating a voice that is authentic, comfortable, and safe (Hancock, 2015).
-
After setting the stage for vocally healthy change with breathwork, tension reduction & voice care, the client will begin working on voice modification inclusive of pitch, intonation & resonance.
